Should Israel Heed The Warning of Attacking Iran?
There are many in the Obama administration that believe that Israel should heed the friendly warning it opposing a preemptive Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities. Recently the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Michael Mullen, warned Israel of the unexpected consequences of an Israeli attack on Iran. The U.S. has taken the position of using sanctions against Iran and has increased attempts to recruit international support for even tougher sanctions. Will this be enough? Will Iran buckle in the wake of the sanctions against its nation? I do not think that it will have the effect on Iran that the U.S. seeks.
Ahmadinejad announced that Iran will enrich uranium to 20 percent and declared that his country is capable of building an atomic bomb. I believe that he would do this with or without the sanctions. Once they reach weapons grade I believe that he will not hesitate in using nuclear weapons against Israel, other Middle Eastern countries and against America.
This places Israel in a very difficult position. It is apparent that Iran must be stopped. If Israel does attack Iran, Ahmadinejad has vowed that if Israel goes to war, "we need to put an end to the Zionist regime once and for all." This would certainly mean that Iran would retaliate in some fashion against Israel. However, if Israel does nothing than attack against Israel and the west is imminent. The situation is made more difficult in the fact that Israel needs to give the Obama administration a chance before it tries to take care of the problem. This is because Israel will need full American support for any actions it may decide to take against the Iranian threat. In order to pull off the attack on Iran, Israel is going to need intelligence, military equipment and diplomatic support from the United States.
Earlier in the year Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at Auschwitz and equated Iran as the new Amalek. This is interesting as we prepare to celebrate the feast of Purim remembering the deliverance of the Jewish people and the defeat of Amalek.
The rest of the world, including Iran, watches Israel expecting her to do something. This takes away a great advantage of a surprise attack, yet something must be done to save the world from such evil and who better than Israel.
